2008 Conference Achieves New
Heights
The Statewide Conference on Education of the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing educated, entertained and enlivened an
enthusiastic crowd of over 800 conference goers in Galveston, Tx.
The 2008 conference theme was Student Success: Achieving New
Heights. Sixteen workshop sessions ran continuously during the
2.5 day conference with strands for parents, interpreters, and
educators focusing on ways to help our children succeed. Two
keynote presentations were highlights. Dr. Marc Marschark,
professor at NTID, addressed children’s literacy and things
we know or thought we knew from research. The second keynote
speaker, Ken Glickman, entertained with his DEAFology 101.
Thirty-eight vendors and exhibitors provided up to date
information, technology and educational materials for review.
Childcare made it possible for many parents to participate and
enjoy having their families with them. The Moody Gardens Spa
& Convention Center provided the backdrop for the conference
and gave everyone multiple opportunities for fun in the resort
setting. Multi-day passes for all the Moody Garden Pyramids and
attractions were available at a deep discount. If you missed this
wonderful opportunity for networking, learning from your peers,
listening to experts, and enjoying the camaraderie of the
statewide conference, join us in the summer of 2010 in Ft. Worth,
Tx. July 22 – 24, 2010. The conference will be in the new
Omni Hotel opening January 2009. Texas Association of Parents and
Educators for the Deaf (TAPED) wishes to thank Texas School for
the Deaf, Texas Regional Education Service Centers, Regional Day
School Programs for the Deaf, and the Texas Department of
Assistive and Rehabilitative Services- Office for Deaf and Hard
of Hearing Services for their continued support of this
conference. A special thank you to Sharon Parham, conference
chair and to all the members of the planning committee, who
worked two years to bring you the 2008 conference. This year all
registered conference goers received a free two - year membership
in TAPED. We are also pleased to announce our very first parent
elected as TAPED President for the 2008-10 term, Rebeka Gillilan.
See you in 2010!
Connie Ferguson, Past President TAPED 2002-2008.

New Approved Bylaws
Special Called Meeting Results: Proposed Bylaws
Passed!
The new bylaws have been voted on and passed by the membership
just in time for the 2008 conference. Members wanting to make
amendments to the new Bylaws, should attend the TAPED business
meeting at the Statewide Conference on Education of the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing next week in Galveston. We are excited about the
restructuring of the organization and the added service it will
bring to members. The officers titles will now reflect the new
structure in the 2008-10 election. Read the new Bylaws at this
link.
